Drafty December

Winter is coming in full force. Now is when you may notice the drafts in your house. The same can be said for your wood boiler. Just as you would check the seals on doors and windows in preparation for these cold months, your wood boiler’s door is just as important.
Door rope is one of the most important components of your firebox door. This is the seal that keeps the stove running perfectly. If your stove is not sealed properly, it could overheat when it is in the shut-down cycle as it is drawing air. Most of our stoves use a 1-inch door rope. Greentech Manufacturing carries both 1-inch and 1.25-inch door rope. We recommend a silicone covered door rope for ease of use and durability. This rope is less susceptible to soaking up and retaining condensation and moisture.
It is important to check your door rope often. Depending on the size and model of the stove you have, door rope can last anywhere from 3 to 5 years. Signs that your door rope needs replacing are compressed rope or a degrading rope. Both are signs your rope should be replaced immediately.
The most important maintenance to your door, that needs to be done often, is door adjustment. Look at your boiler door daily. Thoroughly check the way your door is sealing monthly and adjust your door as needed. With direct contact with the elements (heat, cold, rain & snow) the metal on your stove can expand and contract. It is important to check how your door is sealed to be able to adjust and burn efficiently.
